Kelly Rhoades' Digital Portfolio

I'm one of the Fundraising Committee Co-Chairs for SRU's Green and White Society. Monday before spring break we picked the winners. The first prize winner of $5,000 towards one year of tuition is Brett Schindler, a sophomore. The second prize winner of $600 towards one year costs of books is Brandon Erskine, also a sophomore. I called both of them today, and they weren't home so their mothers answered. They both were so excited.

It's really nice to know that you made someone so happy and really helped them out with their college career. We are inviting them both to our meeting on Tuesday, March 28 to take pictures and kind of make a big deal out of it. We are going to give them a leaflet of information on what they need to do to get their money. They need to be registered as a full time student in order to receive their winnings, but registration isn't until the beginning of April. I'm also going to make big checks made out of poster board, like the ones that Publisher Clearing House give away.

I got a lot of homework done today, but I will have a little more. Hopefully I can get a lot of the reading I still have to do done tonight. I work tomorrow at Old Navy and am thinking about getting my hair cut on Saturday, ahh!

Last night I came back to Slippery Rock. I worked today at the Call Center and gave a potential employee a tour of the campus. He's a 2009 graduate and grew up in Slippery Rock, so I'm sure he already knew everything I was telling him. I have another tour tomorrow, but he isn't a SRU grad, so he won't know much I'm sure. I came home and have been working on finishing up my digital portfolio.

Tomorrow and Thursday I work at the Call Center and on Friday and Saturday I work at Old Navy. It's almost Wednesday and I still have so much homework to do. I need to read for Organization Communication and start the paper for our second assignment, fix and continue working on the Beach Club Campaign, finish my digital portfolio, e-mail my mock interviewer, e-mail people for my internship and hopefully I can start my self-assessment. Wow, that's quite a lengthy list. I also need to contact the Tuition Raffle winners and make them big checks with leaflets telling them what to do to get their money.

Today I sent out the check to save a seat for West Chester University. In a couple days, I'll officially be a student. It's weird to think about and I'm a little nervous!

First and foremost, happy birthday to my cousin Lisa! She's 20 and a fantastic young lady!

Today I had Spanish, although almost nobody was there. People always skip the Friday before spring break. I went to my internship and took a lot of pictures! I went to the Communication Department and took some pictures of the labs, the Equipment Check-Out Room and an Interactive Multimedia II class for the social media networks. The instructor for Interactive Multimedia II is Doug Strahler, an '05 SRU graduate and temporary instructor at SRU. I got a lot of pictures of him helping students.

I went back to the office and helped Laura Disantis, the graduate assistant for the Annual Fund Office, with a senior mailing that needed to be sent out. I came home and updated the rockalumnicafe.com website and scheduled the electronic newsletter to be sent. I then uploaded the pictures I took today, picked my favorites and resized them.

This week I'm going to work on my Conneaut Lake Park proposal, my digital portfolio, my self assessment and work at the Call Center.

Today my group was supposed to go to The Beach Club at Conneaut Lake Park, but at the last mintue everyone bailed. So I went to the CSIL, which I'm going to be featuring on SRU's social media sites, and talked to Brad Kovaleski, the director of the Center of Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL). We talked about getting pictures and what information should be put on the networks. I then went to the Communication Department and took some pictures of students using InDesign, a program used to design publications. I took some pictures of faculty talking in the hallway, which they were doing anyway.

I then went to the Equestrian Center and took pictures of the campus, there is a great view! I then drove up to the Gail Rose Stadium Lodge, there is also a great view of the new residential halls and the new union. The only down side was that it was really muddy and I definitely wasn't wearing the proper footware. I did get some good pictures though!

After that, I went to work at the Call Center for the rest of the day. Tomorrow, I have Senior Seminar at 8 a.m. and PR Campaigns at 5 p.m. It's definitely going to be a long day. Friday is the last day of class before spring break! I'll still have Spanish and my internship to go to before a week of freedom! It'll be nice to relax for a couple days!

Happy March 2!

On Thursday I worked at the Call Center and had my internship. I thought of a brilliant idea for SRU's social media networks. Well, first, I asked what people wanted to see on the sites. I'm not in charge of the sites to put what I want would think people wanted to see. So, I figured I might as well ask! Many said they want more updates on athletic scores, pictures of renovations and construction, updates of upcoming lectures and activites and did I mention pictures?

One guy said that, as a parent, he wants to see students involved in classes, sports and activites. That gave me this idea. Why not every week or biweekly, I highlight a department, sport or organization/activity? That way, current and prospective students are learning about what goes on here and if they would like to be involved and alumni are seeing what current things are happening in their department and around campus. I'm brilliant.

I figured, I might as well use the Communication Department as my guinea pig since I know most of the faculty and a lot of the students. I want to get a picture of a student working on InDesign or Photoshop to show that students learn how to use new programs for design. I also thought it would be neat to get a picture of Professor Strahler teaching, or pretending to teach, since he is a 2005 graduate of SRU and is teaching here, too. I want a picture of the equipment that students can check out and learn to use. So I figured I could get a picture of someone checking out a camera or of the cameras we have to check out.

I e-mailed Dr. Flynn, the chair of the communication department, and he said it was a great idea! So I'm glad he agrees! I also e-mailed the Pro Animal Welfare Society to feature them, but no one has gotten back to me yet.

Aside from that, I want to take pictures of the Equestrian Center, Macoskey Center and the new DiSpirito fields. The best time to do that would probably be during spring break, when I don't have classes to go to and actually have time to get some stuff together.

Thursday night I had my campaigns class. Everything seems to be going relatively smoothly for our group. We've finally figured out what we want our events to be. We want a beer and wine festival, an olympics type of event for those under 21 and movie nights on the beach. I would definitely go to all of these events, no doubt. We decided to actually go see the Beach Club this upcoming Wednesday, it will make it so much easier to visualize everything after having seen it. We are also going to meet on Sunday night to talk about our survey results and start getting details for our campaign. We're getting the ball rolling, people! Finally!

Today was a payday Friday so I had to go to the Call Center early to figure out everyone's payrates. I had a test in Spanish. I was very confident in all of my answers and feel really good about it.

At my internship, I wrote little blurbs that go into the Rock Magazine, which is the alumni magazine that gets sent out. Alumni Relations is in charge of the Class Notes section of the magazine which consists of: class notes, marriages, births/adoptions and deaths.

Now, I'm going to try to get everything for campaigns done. I need to check my e-mail to see if Megan sent me the information so I can make graphs based on the survey results. I was really confused as to what Dr. Quinn wanted concerning the communication audit. On the sheet, it said it was a fact sheet and in class, Dr. Quinn kept saying communication audit. I e-mailed her and got it figured out so I just need to add a little information to get that almost completely completed. We want to add information about their menu, but we won't know anything until we get to go there on Wednesday. I need to read Chapter 5 for organizational communication for Monday.

I work at Old Navy tomorrow from 12-5 p.m. and at the Call Center on Sunday from 5-9 p.m.

Homework, ready or not, here I come!

It's almost Thursday. Since when?

Slippery Rock weather is so ridiculously unpredictable. Friday it was in the high 50's and Monday night it was a huge blizzard. I had night class on Monday and it was so bad outside that we were let out halfway through class.

Tuesday I had work at the Call Center, my internship at Alumni Relations and the Green and White Society open house. At work, we're starting to get together a committee for Senior Class Gift. Hopefully we can get a good group again this year! At my internship, I updated alumni in the Raiser's Edge Software from SRU's LinkedIn account. At Green and White, only around 12 people showed up, which I thought was pretty low. I thought many more people were going to attend.

Today I had work early at the Call Center and Spanish at 11. We have our second test on Friday, which will be challenging. I had a meeting with Professor Strahler to look over my digital portfolio so he could give me some suggestions on what to improve. I also had a meeting today with my group for my campaigns class. We are just finishing up our research for our Beach Club Campaign. I worked both the daytime and night sessions at the Call Center. Everyone is doing fabulous! They raised over $4,000!

I got called in to work at Old Navy on Saturday from 12-5 p.m. Originally they wanted me to work from 6-10 a.m. tomorrow morning, but I have Senior Seminar at 8 a.m. so that's pretty impossible. Now I'm unable to go to the basketball games on Saturday. I was really looking forward to going, too!

Now some time to relax!

It took me a really long time to transcribe the focus group. All of Saturday and Sunday. I didn't realize how much people talk on top of each other. I wasn't able to read for my night class, which I'm going to do after I finish this up.

I worked at the Call Center last night. I supervise Sunday nights, the Wednesday daytime shift and Wednesday nights. We just hired new callers and they are still learning what information is good to say and how to make the script their own.

The picture at the bottom is of North Hall on Slippery Rock University's campus. I took it on Friday and it was surprisingly nice out. That lasted about two days. It's back to raining/snowing and cold temperatures. It was a nice little tease from mother nature.

Today my group had our focus group for our Conneaut Lake Park campaign. It went really well and we got a lot of useful information out of it! Everyone got along well together, which made it even better. It took about an hour, which is how long we thought it was going to take.

For the most part, conversation seemed to flow pretty well. Sometimes we had to interject to keep them on the topic of Conneaut Lake Park.

I recently got a second job at Old Navy at the Grove City Outlets. I worked at the Old Navy in a local mall in Altoona when I was in high school. This morning I was called into work for a four hour shift. I worked 4-8 p.m.

Tomorrow evening I'm supervising at the call center, so I need to get all my homework done tonight!

I'm off to start transcribing the focus group so I can have it done for our group meeting on Monday!

Today was one of the first really warm days at Slippery Rock University! It had to have been about 55 degrees. Only bad thing, it was ridiculously windy.

At my internship today, I took pictures of the new Student Union being built. The blue sky made many of the pictures look really nice. I also got some good pictures of North Hall. I maintain SRU's Facebook page and RockAlumni Twitter account and every Friday I have Rock Trivia! This weeks question was about North Hall. In what year and during what event did North Hall burn down? You'll find out Monday!

I also updated rockalumnicafe.com, which is the Rock alumni online community.

Tomorrow at 1 p.m., my PR Campaigns group has our focus group. We hope it will help out greatly with our research for The Beach Club Campaign for Conneaut Lake Park. I'll have to transcribe the focus group, that way we can group ideas to better use it for our presentation. We will individually contact 10 people/businesses for our statistical survey. This will help to provide concrete, numerical facts for our client.

I just finished updating my resume and cover letter. They look fantastic, if I do say so myself.

I'm really interested in Ghost Adventures, a show on the Travel Channel about ghost hunting. It's crazy how they can capture EVP's, apparitions and can actually feel contact.

I'm off to continue my weekend of homework!
